Preparing your pool for winter can be a daunting task as pool owners exert a seemingly endless amount of time and effort on finding ways to properly winterize their pool. At Great Lakes Pool & Spa we can tell you that the most important winterizing tool is the winter pool cover. Pool cleaning, lowering the water level, using anti-pool freeze solutions and other winterizing processes are useless without the presence of winter pool covers.
A winter pool cover plays an essential role in maintaining the pool condition throughout the cold season. It prevents dirt, debris and snow from entering the water, thus keeping the pool clean and crystal clear all season long. Installing a winter cover also prevents pool-freeze caused by heavy snow fall. Finally, and probably most importantly, winter pool covers help secure the safety of your family by preventing accidental submersion of children and household pets.
Below are some tips on how to install your above ground winter pool cover properly.
- Make sure you are done winterizing the pool: Pool winterizing included cleaning the pool by removing all the dirt, debris and other solid particles in the water. Secondly, you need to lower the water level down to the return fitting and skimmer. Lastly, you should put anti-freeze pool chemicals into the pool to avoid freezing during the frigid winter months. It is absolutely essential that all of the necessary steps that require access to the water are done before installing the winter cover.
- Stretch out the cover and put it over the pool: When installing your winter cover you will notice that the size of the cover is larger than the size of your pool. This is because once you place it over the pool, the middle will drop down due to the lowered water level. Additionally, the excess part of the cover will be used to overlap the pool walls to create a tight seal.
- Line the cable through the cover’s grommets around the edge: Now that the winter cover is placed over the pool, you can line the cable around the edge of the cover. Slot the bale into the winch and pull firmly to secure the cover.
- Use cover clips to keep the cover firmly in place: To prevent damages on the winter cover due to heavy winds, use cover clips to secure the edge of the cover. The clips will keep the cover firmly in place and prevent it from flipping which can cause tears and breaks in the surface of the cover.
Using the winter cover is important to maintaining the condition and lifespan of your pool.
